The delft tiles and tile pictures are reproductions of Dutch or so called "Delft" wall tiles, that are produced since the 16. century. Back then, the tile culture started to blossom and the Dutch Delft developped into becoming the centre of tile production. Later the tiles were also produced in Friesland. Therefore they are also known under the name »friesische Witjes« - as white blind-tile or tiles with typical blue painting.
The Witjes-tiles we offer are made by hand using the historical fayence technique. The painting is oriented to original artwork. Only by traditional craftmanship it is possible to make a product that closely resembles the original Delft tiles and their special charisma.
A raw clay compound gets rolled out to a basic tile shape, pre-dried and than cut to size with a wooden square frame. After 3-4 weeks the tiles are completely dry and are annealed with a first firing, the bisque firing, at 900°. The tiles are given their initial glaze or get decorated with paintings before the second firing, the so-called glost firing.
The tiles have two small holes in each corner, the so called Gaatjes. These holes result from cutting the tiles to their final format using a wooden stencil (the wooden stencil has two small nails in each corner to ensure the tile does not get out of place during cutting).
The Witjes tiles are produced in the historical size of 13x13 cm. Due to the manufacturing process slight deviations in size may occur. The edges of the tile are connically cut inward, so you can lay the tiles with narrow gaps.
White is not simply white. A special characteristic of the Witjes is the slight colour differences of the white colour shades. The colours range from nearly pure white to white with slight pink, blue, green or grey colourings. On larger surfaces these colour shades create a lively effect. We offer the "Witjes" tiles in either a softer colouring (white shades 2-4) or with more vibrant colours (white shades 2-6). The painted tiles usually only have one shade of white as basic colour.
Deviations in size, colour and painting are intended and are no reason for complaint.
The glaze of the Witjes shows fine hairline cracks, the so-called craquelé. The craquelé develops a couple of weeks after storage. If desired we apply an additional patina on the tiles, so that the craquelé structure comes out clearly.
The painting is made before the second firing with a "Sponse" (a special kind of stencil that is used for the painting) and a bag filled with coal dust. This is used to mark the contours of the motif. A special brush is used to trace the contours, the subsequent colouring is than made freely. Traditionally the motifs are painted blue; other colours only on request.
The packaging unit for single-coloured tiles in softer colouring or vibrant colouring is 30 pcs. = 0,5 square meters. We usually have small quantities in stock. If they are not in stock, you have to consider a lead time of 3-4 weeks.
The painted tiles are always custom-made. You can order any desired quantity with a lead time of 3-4 weeks.
Tiles can only be transported safely with a forwarding agency. We would be pleased to provide you with an offer for delivery on your construction site. Transport cost depends on weight and distance. To prepare the offer we need to know the amount of tiles you intend to buy and your postcode.
Small quantities may be shipped with a parcel service. The tiles are padded and packed carefully. However there is always a risk of breaking that we will pass to you. Shipping costs on request.
The tiles are mounted onto the wall with a customary tile cement. Tiles should get cut with a wet cutter. A clean cut is achieved by scratching the cut face with a glass cutter beforehand, otherwise the glaze may splinter. Tiles should get laid with narrow joints. Due to manufacturing tolerances (the size of the tiles deviates) the joints should be between 0-3 mm. Consequently an irregular joint pattern emerges - as is intended.
For jointing we recommend standard, undyed joint sealer. For the tiles with softer colouring as well as the tiles with more vibrant colouring we recommend a joint sealer of silver-grey colour. For the other colour shades it is best to seek advise from your tiler with regards to the colour.
You do not have to impregnate glazed Witjed tiles. It is advisable to impregnate tiles with craquelé when they are laid in wet areas or in the kitchen (e.g. behind the stove). We recommend to use products from LITHOFIN:
The glazed surface is easy to maintain and insensitive. The only cleaning instruction we give you, is to not use abrasives to clean the tiles. For cleaning and care we recommend products for glazed tiles from LITHOFIN or any other producer of cleaning agents you will find in specialist shops.
Please adhere to the manufacturers instructions.
