General product information
-
Many years ago, doormats, shoe scrapers or shoe scrapers - also known as "Scharryse" in southern regions - were a natural and very useful object in front of every entrance area. The shoe scraper was made of iron, more or less decorated, and was found at almost every front door. In the meantime, however, it has become a relic from the times when access routes to the house were not yet paved throughout. Firmly anchored in the floor or wall, it pragmatically symbolised cleanliness and tidiness inside the house.
And yet: even if the shoe scraper has lost its significance outside the house, it still proves to be a useful detail when accessing garden or workshop rooms, for example when gardening in inclement weather leaves its mark on footwear.

Production and surface
Our wrought iron shoe scrapers are made in a small forge in the Black Forest using traditional craftsmanship. They are galvanised black afterwards, so they do not rust and retain their dark colour. On request, we can also have them made in raw iron, as was customary in the past. They will then rust outdoors and take on an authentic appearance.
The cast-iron shoe scrapers are reproduced in a small iron foundry based on our original models. In contrast to forged iron, the production process of iron casting allows for a somewhat finer ornamentation.Cast iron shoe scrapers are not galvanised, only painted black. The paint will wear off over the years through use and wear and tear and the shoe scraper will show its own signs of use.
