Ornamental glass, also known as cast glass or patterned glass, have a one-sided embossed, ornamented surface structure. Around the time of the turn of the century up to the Art Nouveau period, a multitude of various patterns existed, where some patterns are irretrievably lost already.
The surface structure of the glass is produced in a particular production procedure: The glass is cast at 1200 ° C between two rollers and processed accordingly, then cooled and cut to size. Due to embossments in the aforementioned rollers the glasses get their distinctive patterned surface. Depending on the type of roller, glasses with stars, waves, honeycombs, prisms and other shapes in the glass surface are created.
In contrast to even float glass, ornamental glasses are not transparent but translucent. They refract the light in their own way and create a diffuse light effect but at the same time they still have a high light transmittance.
Even today these glasses are used in flat entrance doors as a design element. Patterned glass is particularly suitable for spaces where light shall shine in, but a clear view is not desired, for example in bathrooms, doors, skylights, or even as screen within offices.
Due to the production process, the available glass sizes are limited to the specified pane size. Custom-made panes in larger sizes can not be produced. We would like to point out that due to production factors, ornamental glass may exhibit edging and as a result the panes may vary in size.
Due to the production process the glasses may exhibit small irregularities and colour deviations: differing glass thickness, small air pockets or surface markings make up the characteristic appeal of the glass.
Ornamental glass can also be processed into insulated glass. We are happy to provide you with an offer. Please indicate dimensions and desired thickness on your order.
The indicated prices are quoted per pane ex works Freiburg, collection by the customer. The minimum order quantity is 1/2 pane - cut horizontally. We are happy to offer cutting the glass as additional service.
We usually have small quantities in stock. For larger order quantities please consider a lead time of 2-3 weeks. The lead time for insulated glass is 2-3 weeks as well.
The delivery is made in made to measure wooden crates. Cuts may be shipped with parcel services, bigger parts can only be transported safely with a forwarding agency. . We are happy to offer cutting of the glass and the best possible shipping method. Shipping costs on request.
