Decorated cast iron columns were introduced in urban architecture during industrialisation mid-19th century. Initially only used in large station concourses, sweeping factories and warehouses, and in the elegant iron and glass constructions of orangeries as supporting pillars, they were used more often around the turn of the century. Cast pillars could be bought off the shelf in a variety of lengths and designs. In urban homes they were often used as a balcony and canopy support, they were also often used as a design element of the entrance area of prestigious villas or storefronts.
The decorative elements made of cast-iron that we offer are placed on a commercially available steel tube with a diameter of 101.6 mm / 4 ". Thus, static load requirements can be implemented more easily than with a historical column, which is made entirely of cast iron.
The formative element of the column is the richly ornamented Corinthian capital. For technical reasons, this consists of individual shells, which have to be assembled. For a complete capital you need 4 pieces of quarter-shells.
As an optical counterweight to the prominent capital, the base element is mounted at the foot of the column. The middle ring is an optional additional decorative element, through which the column is subdivided again.
The decorative elements are produced according to our original templates in an iron foundry in Portugal. Liquid iron at high temperatures is poured in negative molds and then machined. The material used is an iron alloy with a high proportion of carbon in the form of graphite - GG20 to DIN 1691. This gives the final product its typical grey color. Through the excellent casting properties of cast iron, it is possible to produce highly detailed parts with high acutance and reproductional accuracy.
Cast iron is a material having high corrosion resistance. However, it will form a superficial rust patina when used in outdoor areas. Since the trims for attachment must be drilled, welded or otherwise processed, we offer these only primed but not galvanized. Galvanising of the completely assembled column, can be made subsequently by your locksmith in a galvanising plant. The trims can be painted with micaceous iron oxide or a color of your choice after installation.
Columns are still used today in a variety of ways as special architectural design element in and around the house: In the wintergarden, on the terrace or veranda or in freestanding pavilions they come into their own. Commonly, the columns are also used to support balconies. In representative entrance areas or in big rooms, such as in restaurants or spacious lofts, the ornate pillars help shape the room and are a real eye-catcher.
The individual trims can be ordered as individual elements. The steel tube is not included. This can be easily obtained from your local locksmith. You avoid unnecessarily high transportation costs.
We usually have these items in stock and they are ready for delivery immediately.
We ship with DPD as insured oversize package, delivery costs Germany 25,00 € (+ possibly island surcharge), EU countries and non EU-countries: shipping costs on request.
There are several possibilities to fix the decorative elements on the steel column: screwing, welding, glueing. We have therefore not provided pre-drilled holes. The capital consists of individual quarter-shells which have to be joined together. Previously, these were mostly just joint and screwed together. However, the joints can be smoothed and then sanded.
Mounting must only be carried out by a qualified specialist. We cannot accept any liability for damages due to incorrect mounting.
