The signal bells, as this bell is also called, came up with the invention of the railway: a clearly distinguishable acoustic signal that should warn about dangers and attract attention. For more than a century it was the common bell used in houses and flats.
The sound of this bell is produced by a clapper, that beats against a cone in rapid succession. The clapper is set in motion by a contact breaker circuit in the manner of a trembler: An anchor attached to a steel spring is pulled by an electromagnet (by this the clapper hits against the cone) until - at maximum pull - the circuit is interrupted and the clapper springs back. Thus the circuit is closed and the anchor gets pulled again by the electromagnet - the process starts all over again and the bell rings. The advantage over todays common 2-tone-gong is that the bell rings as long as the bell button is pushed.
Do not connect the bell to a power supply line but to a bell-wire with an upstream transformer (output voltage 8-12 V~). Battery operation is not possible. The bell can be installed directly behind the front door or anywhere else in the house.
