In the past windows were just locked, around the Biedemeier period mostly with small turning latches, so-called sash locks. The Bascule window lock, also called Basquill- or Bascule gearbox, became the standard window locking technology in the middle of the 19th century. These are fitted window gearboxes with push rods. The advantage is that with only a single rotational movement, the window could be opened and closed. This technology was the forerunner of today's inner window gearboxes.
Bascule window gear boxes are push rod locks: The push rods are simultaneously moved up and down on the body of the gear box with the rotary handle, called window catch or olive. The push rods are supported at both ends by means of so-called end guides. These are applied to the casement. Basquill screws or end caps are screwed on the window frame into which the push rods are inserted on top and bottom when it is closed.
Gearboxes with locking latch (= rotating bolt) feature an additional locking point, a catch hook, in which the bolt is engaged when turning. The window thus has three locking points.
As many technical details in earlier times also the Basquill locks were designed according to the style of the house and more or less decorated with time typical ornamentation.
Basquill locks are often used in classy renovations of old buildings. They can be mounted easily on new windows.
Gearbox, handle olive and guideways are made of cast iron, painted matt black - half-round rods are made of iron, untreated.

The half round rod must be separated, shortened to the length you need and put into the gearbox. The assembly of the gearbox, the guides and the Basquill screws is done by simply screwing them on. Depending on the rollover strength of the window the Basquille screw must be more or less protruding, or the end cap must be slightly shimmed.
Mounting should only be carried out by a qualified specialist. We cannot accept any liability for damages due to incorrect mounting.
Untreated iron tends to corrode and acquire a rust film even in the dry interior. It can easily be removed with fine wire wool and if needed you can apply a hard oil based on linseed oil or wax for protection.
Bass fittings are going to get darker, become more irregular and the colouration will become livelier over time. The fitting will form a patina and converge to the look and feel of original historic fittings. If desired you may refurbish the mount. We recommend the polishing wool €Nevr Dull€®.
