Gargoyles, also known as "gargoyles" (English) or "gargouilles" (French), have been around since ancient times. Gargoyles have and had the function of "spraying" the water collected in a rain gutter away from the building and thus protecting the masonry. Gargoyles also had a symbolic meaning in earlier times: they were often designed as animalistic, sometimes mythical and demonic creatures. Their demonic appearance was intended to ward off evil spirits and demons and protect the building from evil forces.
Nowadays, gargoyles are used more as a playful element: As decorative rain gutter ornaments or roof edge finishes, as water spouts for fountains or as individual design elements in the garden area.
