General product information
- LINCRUSTA, also known as Linkrusta, was first produced in 1877 by the English chemist Frederick Walton. He was also the inventor of the well-known floor covering linoleum. The name LINCRUSTA is an artificial word made up of the two Latin words "linux", linen, and "crusta", hard shell. LINCRUSTA therefore consists mainly of the natural materials linseed oil, pine resins and slurry chalk. The mass is heated, applied to firm paper as a base layer and profiled with pattern rollers. The flexible yet robust and pressure-resistant material was primarily used as a wall covering in high-quality furnished private and public spaces. It was also used to cover luxury railway carriages. The special feature of LINCRUSTA is its deep embossed structure. Thanks to its distinctive three-dimensionality, this wall covering gives the room an exclusive touch.

Instructions for application
Be careful when handling Lincrusta to avoid damaging the surface. After soaking and pasting (see below), Lincusta becomes smoother. Preparation of the substrate
It is important to prepare the surface thoroughly: remove old wallpaper and distemper, wash the wall, fill in any unevenness and allow to dry. Sand the wall before pasting. Prime highly absorbent substrates with a deep penetration primer (product recommendation: Henkel Dextra TU wallpaper primer). The substrate must be clean, even, stable, free of cracks, dimensionally stable, dry and free of adhesion-reducing substances.Possible application of waste paper
In order to ensure the best possible adhesion, we recommend that you also apply an additional paste for non-absorbent substrates (e.g. emulsion paint). Apply the paste with special paste (product recommendation Henkel Metylan + 20% Henkel Ovalit in a ratio of 1:20) across the room. Before wallpapering with Lincrusta, ensure that the paste is completely dry.Tools required

Cutting LINCRUSTA wallpaper to size
Set the start and end points in the room to minimise waste. Note the offset if necessary. When cutting the strips to size, add 5 cm to the top and bottom.
Cut the protective strips straight using a knife and wallpaper ruler. Hold the knife at a slight angle and only apply light pressure to the product. Take care not to damage the edges. The recommended cutting dimensions for the various designs can be found in the table opposite.
Soaking and pasting
Use a sponge to moisten the back of the wallpaper with warm water and leave to soak for 30 minutes. Lay the strips back to back while soaking. Soaking allows the wallpaper to expand and makes it easier to apply the adhesive.After soaking, wipe off any excess water with a cloth. The material is particularly stretchy at this stage. It is therefore advisable to cut any necessary openings (e.g. for switches) at this stage.
Apply an even layer of wallcovering adhesive (product recommendation Henkel Ovalit S) to the back using a notched trowel - B1 for smooth surfaces, B2 for rough surfaces.
Applying the wallpaper
Align the wallpaper plumb and apply to the wall. Carefully remove air bubbles with a rubber roller, working from the centre outwards.Remove excess paste with a sponge.
The drying time is at least 24 hours at room temperature. The drying time must be observed before further surface coating!
Cutting connections and corners to size
Joints and repeats
For a clean bottom finish, mark the wallpaper at the top edge of the skirting board. Hold a cutting board between the wallpaper and the wall and cut along the marking using a sharp knife and a wallpaper ruler. Repeat at the top edge.
Inner corners
Cut to fit into the corner. Position the offcut perpendicular to the adjacent wall and cut flush with the corner. Cut the reliefs in the corner at a 45° angle.
External corners
Lincrusta can be easily moulded to gently rounded corners. For acute angles, Lincrusta should be cut flush with the corner. Apply the offcut to the adjacent wall on a perpendicular line that has been marked along the wall according to the width of the offcut at its narrowest point. Repair any gaps (product recommendation: Henkel SISTA M530). Corner profiles (e.g. from the manufacturers DLW and Hobus) have also proved their worth. These should also be mounted with SISTA M530.
Cutting LINCRUSTA friezes to size
Cut the required strips to size, ensuring that the centre of the pattern coincides with the centre of the main wall. Work from there to the corners and finish in the most inconspicuous corner, as an offset in the repeat may be unavoidable. For wall widths of more than 2 metres, the frieze can be cut into manageable lengths. For longer lengths, it is recommended that the frieze is applied by 2 people.

Pre-treatment for colour coating
Lincrusta's main ingredient is linseed oil. To prevent the coloured coating from peeling off again after a short time, it must first be thoroughly degreased or coated with a primer. Degreasing can be carried out by rubbing thoroughly with white spirit or turpentine substitute. Finally, clean with a fibre-free cloth and leave to dry overnight. CAUTION Safety note: Fire hazard when using solvents! In addition, all cloths and rags soaked in solvent must be laid out flat to dry to prevent spontaneous combustion. When using white spirit, we recommend wearing protective goggles and glovesWhen using the Sikkens products recommended by us, degreasing is not necessary!
General information on colour design and coating
Lincrusta can be coated with both oil-based and water-based colour. This can be done with a roller or brush.First, an oil-based primer or water-based acrylic paint is applied, followed by two coats of semi-matt or gloss paint or semi-matt or matt emulsion. Decorative effects are achieved with a further top coat. Finally, the Lincrusta wall can be coated with a protective varnish for safety.
Product recommendation for the coating
Base coat - Due to the linseed oil content, the solvent-containing alkyd resin-based base coat SIKKENS Rubol Grund Plus is recommended. SIKKENS Rubol BL Multiprimer can be used as a water-based system. However, the mechanical load-bearing capacity is lower in this case.Intermediate and top coat - solvent-based design:
