Glazes with craquelure
The mostly semi-transparent glazes give the Art Nouveau tiles their unique depth of colour. Fine cracks in the glaze, known as craquelé, form a dense network and act as a special design element. The craquelure usually becomes more pronounced over time and is the result of the ageing process - just like the Art Nouveau originals. On request, the glazes can also be designed to be low in craquelure.
Play of colours
These tiles are still glazed by hand. This can lead to fluctuations in the thickness of the glaze, so that the unicoloured tiles show a clear play of colours. The glazes become thin during firing. As the blanks are never completely flat, the glaze runs irregularly and forms thicker and thinner layers. The result is a tile that also has a clear colour gradient within itself. This creates unique, vibrant tile surfaces when laid.
Dimensional tolerances
The tiles are not calibrated and there may be slight differences in size between individual batches due to different drying and firing shrinkage. Borders and skirting tiles usually have significant dimensional differences. It is recommended that these are arranged offset to the other wall tiles. This interrupts alignments and the linear grid and makes the tile panel appear more harmonious and relaxed.
Suitability
Art Nouveau tiles are made of glazed stoneware and are not frost-resistant when wet. They should only be used in indoor areas and covered outdoor areas.
Combinations
By combining unicoloured tiles with decorative and border tiles, you can create your very own individual tile panel. The skirting tiles and the unicoloured border tiles are available in the same colours as the unicoloured tiles. The glaze is applied by spraying. In the case of decor tiles, the coloured glazes are applied by hand using a brush or paint horn - the colour composition is therefore different, resulting in different colour nuances to the unicoloured tiles.

Laying
The tiles can be laid with any commercially available tile adhesive. Depending on the substrate, they can be laid in thin, medium and thick beds.
When laying the unicoloured tiles, ensure a random cross-mix to achieve a lively and balanced appearance. To do this, remove the tiles from each box in turn as you lay them.
The sharp-edged wall tiles can be laid with narrow joints of approx. 1 mm (max. 2 mm). The narrower the joint, the more attractive the overall effect of the surface. In the past, these tiles were even laid without joints (crunch). Borders and ornamental strips in a tile panel should be laid with a staggered joint. The design aim is to visually reduce the joint in order to allow ornaments, colours and glaze effects to dominate.
All installation work must be carried out by a tiler who is familiar with the specific material properties. We accept no liability for improper workmanship.
Grouting
Please only use high-quality grout. Choose a grout colour that is as neutral as possible. With heavily pigmented grouts and strong craquelure, pigments may be absorbed into the craquelure. The effect should be tested on a test tile before grouting. To largely prevent absorption, the tiles can be pre-wetted with a sponge before grouting. Pre-wetting reduces absorbency.
Cutting
The glaze may splinter when cutting. If visible edges need to be cut, the installer must find the most suitable method for himself. For this purpose, test tiles should be cut:
A - Wet cut with a diamond blade for glazed tiles to the nominal size or 1 mm next to the nominal edge, then grind to zero with a grindstone.
B - Dry scribe and break
Impregnating
When using crackled tiles in the kitchen area, they should be sealed with FILA MP/90 to prevent grease from being absorbed. This makes the surface less sensitive to soiling. It is not recommended to use the tiles near the hob. As the craquelure continues to form in the first year, the impregnation process must be repeated after 2 months and after 6 months. In wet areas, tiles with low-craquelé glazes should preferably be used. If craquelé tiles are used in wet areas, impregnation is strongly recommended.
Cleaning and care
A glaze is a coating made of glass. Glazes are not scratch-resistant or acid-resistant. Please do not use scratching objects such as steel sponges or scrapers. Copper-based glazes (greenish and sometimes bluish glazes) can become permanently discoloured by acidic cleaning agents (limescale cleaners, vinegar and citrus cleaners).
Please use pH-neutral to alkaline cleaners, such as Lithofin KF Basic Cleaner or Meister Propper General Cleaner or similar, to clean the wall tiles. Limescale stains are softened by alkaline cleaners and removed with a brush. In stubborn cases, you can also use a dirt eraser (melamine sponge).
